Desktop tools for Instagram marketers

With social media being increasingly popular for marketers, Instagram has been working away for several months on allowing users to upload content using their desktop PC. Instagram is now launching its first live test with a small group of people to try out the posting options.

“We know that many people access Instagram from their computer. To improve that experience, we’re now testing the ability to create a Feed post on Instagram with their desktop browser.” – Instagram

Some users are able to see a new icon when logging into instagram.com. Those who have access will be able to see a “+” icon located in the top bar next to ‘home’, ‘messages’, explore and ‘notifications’. When clicked, a pop-up box will appear which lets the user upload images or videos from their PC files.

You can either press the blue button to pick the photo or video you want or drag it in. Once it loads in, you’ll then have access to tools and options such as the filters, brightness and contrast, like you usually get when using the app on your smart devices.

After you have made all the edits you want, you can hit the ‘Next’ button in the bottom right corner. This will lead you to upload it straight onto Instagram.

For now, Instagram has only made this possible for posts. But over time we could see updates that allow the option to upload Stories or even Reels. It may not be too far away as reports have shown that IGTV uploads are coming. Don’t forget that you can use the Facebook Creator Studio app to upload IGTV posts from your desktop. (But this is restricted to business accounts). As these updates happen, we can expect more and more people to have access to the ‘+’ button.

Why is this needed?

Marketers who make edits with different software on their computers before posting may benefit from this to allow a smooth flow of their work. It will allow them to upload the post without needing to send it over to their smart device just to upload it. It’s another way to manage content and have a quicker process.
