It’s true. Twitter is incorporating emoji reactions into their platform. This feature can create more engagement with followers as there are more ways to express feelings. You may have already seen these on Facebook when you hold down on the like button and raise the options “Like”, “Love”, “Care”, “Haha”, “Wow”, “Sad” and “Angry”.
But these Facebook reactions may not be the same reactions you’ll see on Twitter. Jane Manchun Wong has released some information showing that there will be four new icons; “Cheer”, “Hmm”, “Sad” and “Haha”. These were chosen as it was among the most used emojis worldwide, in 2020, in users’ Tweets. Twitter could continue to monitor users’ habitual behaviours and make more changes over time.
The feelings are mixed for these reactions as it could lead to bullying and condescending to other people’s Tweets. Other views are that they want a dislike button. But this may cause too much negativity on the platform for all users.
Long term users of Twitter may not like this change. Twitter could consider what Instagram is doing with hiding the like display count and do the same for their platform. Hiding the reactions bar could appeal to many users.
